Preparing Your Equipment for Peak Dirt Season

Spring has arrived, and with it comes the start of another busy dirt moving season. Before getting underway, taking the time to properly prepare your equipment is one of the most important steps you can take to ensure maximum uptime, performance and less headache throughout the year.
As you begin your startup process, the Operation & Maintenance (O&M) Manual should remain your primary point of reference. Section 5 provides detailed guidance specific to MTS equipment and is a valuable resource for both operators and service personnel. If your manual is no longer with the machine, digital copies can be found in our EZ Parts portal at www.mobiletracksolutions.com , or requested at no cost by contacting service@mobiletracksolutions.com.

A thorough pre-season inspection is also highly recommended. Utilizing the CAT Inspect App is an efficient way to complete this process, allowing you to document machine condition, identify any areas needing attention, and prioritize repairs before they impact production. Addressing these items early can significantly reduce the likelihood of unexpected downtime once the season is in full swing. Additionally, the CAT Inspect App contains daily operator checklists and PM inspection forms for full integration to your Caterpillar machine portfolio.

Routine maintenance items, such as breathers, are crucial to proper system operation, and should not be overlooked during startup. Fuel tank and axle breathers should be inspected daily and serviced as needed. The hydraulic tank breather should be replaced every 1,000 hours, and the transmission breather should be cleaned every 250 hours and replaced at 1,000-hour intervals. Like any air filter, life cycle of the breathers is heavily dependent on the environment, and service intervals may need to be reduced depending on your specific operation.
Scraper performance is heavily influenced by the condition and type of cutting edges and router bits in use. MTS recommends replacing cutting edges once they are worn to within two inches of the mounting plates, with proper measurement procedures outlined in the scraper’s O&M Manual. Continuing to operate with worn edges can lead to reduced performance, increased fuel consumption, and overall inefficiency, while also introducing the risk of structural damage to the machine. To support a variety of operating conditions, MTS offers a full range of cutting edge options designed to maximize efficiency across different material types. A complete catalog of available options can be accessed through the EZ Parts portal at www.mobiletracksolutions.com.
During operation, proper use of machine controls plays a key role in maintaining system health. The inching pedal, for example, is designed strictly for low-speed maneuvering tasks such as coupling or uncoupling the scraper. Using it as a brake during normal operation can create excessive heat within the transmission and may result in a 1484-7 fault code, indicating improper use. Similarly, operators should be aware of the machine’s transmission stall protection feature. If engine speed drops below 850 RPM for more than a second, the system will automatically shift to neutral to prevent damage, logging an E395 code in the process.
Finally, close attention should be given to the tracks and undercarriage, as these components endure some of the most demanding conditions. Ensuring that drive wheel scrapers are properly installed and adjusted, maintaining the recommended gap to prevent material buildup, and routinely clearing debris from mid-rollers will go a long way in preventing premature wear and avoiding unnecessary downtime. Taking advantage of reversible scraper components when wear is present can also help extend service life.
Preparing your equipment ahead of the season sets the tone for reliable operation and consistent productivity. A proactive approach to inspection, maintenance, and proper operation will help ensure you are ready to meet the demands of the months ahead.
