  • BuildWitt Experiences Earthmoving, 60 Years Apart

Aaron Witt and his BuildWitt Crew recently traveled the country, visiting 30 states in 5 weeks. During their fourth week of the BuildWitt Roadshow, they traveled to Iowa to encounter the true MTS Experience. While in Elkader, they completed a tour of Mobile Track Solutions' facilities, checked out the Earthmoving Legacy Center, and experienced the rich history and positive future of earthmoving. On Wednesday, the day was filled with observing the manufacturing processes, learning about the rich history of earthmoving, and witnessing new and old machines in action. Alongside the 3630 Switchback and 23-28XL scraper, a 1963 Cat 660 and 650 Scraper were in action as well. Early Thursday morning, the group traveled to a nearby jobsite to see a fleet of MTS equipment moving dirt. It was a great time hosting Aaron, Angel, and Jack from BuildWitt! We are grateful they made the stop while in the Midwest!

  • MTS Tracks Forward with New Manufacturing Technology

With a growing dealer network and a continued increase in demand, MTS has continued to evolve our manufacturing practices – especially over the last few years. Most recently, we’ve been in the process of assembling our new Cloos robotic welder within our main production building in Elkader. Heading up this project is 13-year MTS veteran, Danny Wille. Danny’s role within our company has evolved from beginning as a welder on our shop floor, moving to a supervisor role in our fabrication department, and now as a manufacturing engineer for the company. His experience and expertise with manufacturing, especially within our walls, has allowed our team to make the best decisions for the future of the company when it comes to advances in technology on our production floor. When I chatted with Danny on this project he said, “the footprint of this machine is 1,860 ft2, and it has the capacity to produce weldments weighing up to 22,000 pounds.” Another key player in the addition of the Cloos Robotic Welder was Jamie Scherf. “We had three main goals when starting the process of bringing a robotic welder to the facility. The first being the ability to bridge the gap when employee shortages occur. Second, to improve efficiency and overall consistency of product quality. And most importantly, it will improve our overall safety in the welding department by completing the tasks that involve awkward or uncomfortable welding positions”, said Jamie when asked what the main goals were behind this new technology on the floor. This machine has the capability to burn 55 pounds of weld wire per hour, which is comparable to what an experienced human welder can burn within an entire working day. It also eliminates downtime, as it is equipped with two stations and can offload completed components while continuing to weld on the alternative side. We are projected to have the robotic welder fully functional by July, and the team will be spending the coming weeks between assembly and testing. In addition to the Cloos robot, MTS has also invested in several other machines to improve our overall production in Elkader. In 2022, we added the new Kinetic K5000 to improve our beveling and machining quality within the steel cut department. Our engineering team has upgraded design and testing software to increase their ability to draft products and components prior to production. The new paint kitchen was also installed within the last year and has allowed us to reduce waste and increase our uptime by eliminating mixing paint manually. One of our most beneficial additions was the Doosan Lathe which was added a few years ago that was especially valuable as we battled supply chain challenges as a result of the COVID pandemic. All in all, Mobile Track Solutions is continuing to grow and develop both internally and externally. We have reached 23 signed-on Caterpillar dealers across the United States and Australia who sell and service our equipment. We’re doing big things, right here in Elkader, Iowa!

  • Experience MTS Manufacturing

Did you know that October is National Manufacturing Month? Mobile Track Solutions is a manufacturer of construction-grade equipment solutions, such as scrapers, disks, rollerblades, and more. Our 160,000 sq. ft. manufacturing campus employs over 130 individuals in both production and non-production roles. The fall colors provide a beautiful backdrop to Mobile Track Solutions' facilities in Elkader, Iowa. Our 160,000 sq. ft. manufacturing campus employs over 130 individuals in both production and non-production roles. On Thursday, September 29th, Mobile Track Solutions opened our doors to local students and educators for our first Experience Manufacturing event. Each year, we celebrate National Manufacturing Day by offering tours and sharing what we do within our factory in Elkader. We welcomed over 160 students from local school districts to tour our facilities and learn more about the specific career opportunities available right here in Northeast Iowa. Ryan Bergan, Industrial Technology teacher, along with a group of students from Central Elkader stop for a photo in front of a completed MTS 3630 Switchback tractor. Students were welcomed to the factory and toured around by our Senior Leadership Team, where we explained who we are, what we do, and the opportunities available to high school students. Tour guides for the day were Tasha Henkes (Human Resources Manager), Jamie Scherf (General Manager), Phil Rausch (Sales Manager), Chris Lansing (Warehouse Manager), Mike Murray, and Taylor Bockenstedt (Marketing Director). Throughout the day we highlighted three key areas of our business, which happen to also be jobs that we are currently hiring for and will continue to be in high demand over time. Our welding, machining, and fabrication teams shared the process of how blueprints are read and the process of how sheets of steel are bent, cut, and welded together to create a product. We then traveled over to our paint and assembly area where students were able to walk into our new paint kitchen, view freshly blasted and painted scrapers, and see the fully assembled products. Additionally, our product support team shared full schematics prints and prepared a display that compared the weight of our tractor’s engine and transmission to that of a pickup truck. It was a great day at MTS, and we are always grateful for the opportunity to share the many career paths that are available right here in Elkader, Iowa! As we strive to provide additional opportunities to those who choose to stay in the area and start their careers, we’ve found that bringing the future workforce in is the key to getting their foot in the door.

  • Sprout Internship Program

This summer, Mobile Track Solutions welcomed six exceptional college students to the MTS family! Each intern brings his or her unique talents and skills to our team. Recently, all six of them reflected on their experience while interning at MTS. MTS launched the Sprout Internship Program this year to provide an opportunity for students to gain hands-on knowledge about their future related fields. Today on National Intern Day we celebrate these six interns! Left to right: Easton (Engineering Intern), Eli (Engineering Intern), Kenzie (Human Resources Intern), Grace (Vice President Intern), Carson (Parts Intern), Justin (Engineering Intern) Easton is one of our engineering interns this summer at Mobile Track Solutions. “Now, I’m actually doing what an engineer does and it’s nice to see what they do on a daily basis. The best part about my internship is the ability to see what an engineer does every day. I’ve been given my own project for CONEXPO and getting to make prints for all sorts of things,” Easton noted. He continued, “I’m super grateful for this internship because it’s given me valuable experience that I will use in everyday life and in my future engineering career.” Easton is a Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Iowa. Eli attends the University of Iowa as an Industrial Engineering student. “I chose an internship at Mobile Track Solutions because it is fairly close to home. It’s a growing company that is in manufacturing which is the field that I’m planning on going into,” Eli described. “It is a very good experience for a younger engineer like myself to build my portfolio and gain experience by doing stuff that I wouldn’t necessarily have the opportunity to do everywhere else,” Eli, an engineering intern, explained when asked why he chose this opportunity at Mobile Track Solutions. “I’m looking forward to all the upcoming projects because they are pretty cool. We have lots slated for the future and I am excited to work on those,” Kenzie said when asked what she is looking forward to during the remainder of her internship. “All of the aspects of everything here are awesome! The opportunity to come here and be welcomed is amazing. If you ever have the opportunity to take an internship here, don’t overthink it. Just do it,” Kenzie recommends. Kenzie is interning in our human resources department this summer and will be attending Northeast Iowa Community College in the fall to major in Business Administration. Grace is our Vice President’s intern this summer. During her internship she has worked with a variety of departments throughout the company, “I’m able to work with our friends in the warehouse, HR, marketing, and more. It covers a broad range of topics that I get to learn more about.” Grace attends Wartburg College and majors in Business Administration with concentrations in marketing and management. “Especially coming from a college background right now, I’m learning a lot of things in a classroom. It’s easy to read about something in the classroom and be lectured about it for an hour. Until you get into a job, and you get that hands-on experience, you don’t know what’s happening in your field. This internship has been so eye-opening for me, has shown me so many different things, and now I know this is the track I want to be on for my career,” Grace closed. Carson is interning in our parts department this summer. He enjoys working in a real-world business atmosphere. “My favorite part about this internship is meeting everyone and making those connections,” said Carson. He continued as he reflected on meeting the employees and being welcomed, “Being a small company, the culture is very friendly and inviting. You meet a lot of people right away. You don’t feel like a number, you feel like a member of the MTS family.” Carson is an Aerospace Engineering major at Iowa State University. “The more time you can spend in the industry, getting actual experience working with everyone, the better. I would highly recommend it. It has been highly beneficial to me!”, expressed Justin, an engineering intern. Justin described this internship as an opportunity because it is what you make of it. “You are going to get out what you put into it. There is as much work as you want to do, it’s neat how they let you jump right in and get your feet wet. If you want to tackle something heavier, they are happy to turn you loose on it,” Justin described. Justin is an Agricultural Engineering major at Iowa State University (Power and Machinery Option with an Agronomy minor). Do you want to grow with us? Stay up to date with information about our program by following our socials! Mobile Track Solution’s Sprout Internship Program is open to high school or college-aged students who are looking for hands-on experience in their dream occupation. We offer opportunities to work alongside Engineering, Human Resources, Business, Sales, Marketing, Accounting, and more! Be on the lookout for when applications will be accepted for 2023 Summer Interns. National Intern Day is celebrated annually on the last Thursday of July to recognize the future leaders of our world. “The interns of today, are the leaders of tomorrow.”

  • The Safety Pattern

Our brains are a wonderful and complex organ. A unique brain operation is our desire to find and see patterns. We are always looking for dots to connect and to make sense of what we are observing. When we pull into a parking lot, we are looking for the pattern and structured organization of the parking stalls. How often are we frustrated because “that one person” did not park between the lines and messed up the pattern? There is a pattern with safety as well. It helps to create the culture that we want. The safety pattern is made of three parts: Level One: Emotional Safety Level Two: Professional Safety Level Three: Physical Safety Level One: Emotional Safety No one likes explaining why a mistake happened, a work task was not completed correctly, or a goal was not met. We would rather explain the why and how we were successful. So, we tend to put ourselves at risk physically to protect ourselves emotionally. There are three internal questions every person has for every relationship – personal and professional. Do you care about me? Can I trust you? Are you committed to me? To create emotional safety, the answer to each question must be yes. Emotional safety means feeling valued. We may not like to admit it, but our sense of self-worth is influenced by our perception of how others perceive us. A person who feels appreciated will always do more than what is expected. When we know our peers and superiors truly cares about our emotional well-being, we know they care about our physical well-being too. We know they wouldn’t want us taking unnecessary risks which could put us in harm’s way. When we see they truly value us, including our overall safety, so will we. Level Two: Professional Safety Most of us like being respected and known as that employee who will do everything necessary to help meet the goal. Our work is our livelihood. When we feel our job security may be at risk, we may take unnecessary risks to protect our employment, putting ourselves at physical risk. We may use shortcuts, such as not taking the time to get the right tools or put on the PPE. Safety, almost always, requires a little extra time and effort. If we feel that the performance goals are more important to management than our safety, the extra time and effort will not be given. Very successful companies, like Toyota and Southwest Airlines have done an excellent job of establishing that their employees are their number one asset. These companies recognize their employees need to feel valued and as part of their team. Their philosophy is performance issues are correctable by training and designing better ways of working. They succeed because they want their employees to succeed. Level Three: Physical Safety Physical safety is the tangible elements such as equipment safeguards, workspace design and processes, and PPE that most people think about when asked about safety. But this is the last level. Only when we know we are cared about emotionally and professionally will we believe we are cared about physically. Level one through two is the test regarding loyalty from management to employees. Without the first two, level three becomes difficult to reach. When employees feel valued and protected, the physical safety is naturally accepted. It just makes sense. The Safety Pattern With safety, we need to connect the dots in the correct order. Employees need to know they are valued on all three levels. Meeting these needs will lead employees to being more engaged and loyal, and fewer safety incidents on the floor. It is up to management to create the culture of valuing safety by following this pattern; and it is up to us, as individuals, to share the same value of safety in respect to each other.

  • Spring Start Up Tips, Tricks & Reminders

Now that Spring has sprung, dirt moving season in the Midwest will be here before we know it. Ensuring your equipment is ready for operation prior to your start date is necessary to maintain machine performance, longevity, and safety while operating. Here are some helpful tips and reminders as you are preparing for operation. Follow the Operation of Maintenance Manual. Section 5 will give you all the information you need to know about MTS equipment. If the O&M Manual is missing from your unit, contact service@mobiletracksolutions.com to get a PDF copy provided to you at no cost. Conduct an Inspection with the CAT Inspect App. This should be done prior to your start date. Through the CAT Inspect app, you can assign inspections, rate needed repairs, and much more! The Electrical System in our Tractors is 12V. Always ensure you are ordering and installing 12V parts from Caterpillar for engine and tier IV components. Installing the wrong parts will lead to machine breakdowns. Do not use the inching pedal during normal operation. The inching pedal should only be used for “inching operations” such as hooking or unhooking the scraper. The inching pedal is not a brake! Improper use of the inching pedal may lead to heat damage in the transmission. If you are failing to use the inching pedal correctly, the transmission ECM will log a 1484-7 code which identifies the machine is being operated improperly. Transmission Stall Protection. When the engine is lugged below 850 RPM for longer than one second, the tractor will automatically shift to neutral. When this occurs, the transmission ECM will log an E395 (Transmission Stall Condition) code signifying the transmission went into protection mode. Breathers. It is always crucial to change breathers at the correct time, as these are often overlooked. Fuel Tank Breathers and Axle Breathers only need to be changed as needed. The Hydraulic Tank Breather must be changed every 1,000 hours. The Transmission Breather must be cleaned every 250 hours and replaced every 1,000 hours. If your engine air filter is plugging, so are your breathers. Inspect Track and Undercarriage thoroughly. Keeping a well-maintained undercarriage ensures long life and minimal downtime. Always ensure the drive wheel scrapers are installed and adjusted correctly. Build up on the drive wheel can lead to the tracks becoming over-tensioned, causing damage to the inner carcass and drive lugs. Each undercarriage has a reversible drive wheel scraper. If one side is worn enough and can’t sustain the 1/8” gap, it can be flipped over. It is also important to clean out all material from the mid-rollers to prevent lockups and flat spots. We hope these friendly reminders will help prepare you for the upcoming dirt moving season. If you have further questions regarding spring start up or any other questions about our equipment, contact service@mobiletracksolutions.com or message us on our website. • Always Learning

Early in my career I had a manager that made a huge impact on my future. I’m not sure if he knew the impact he was making at the time, but his message still sticks with me today. He put me in a workstation next to the highest caliber Engineers on our staff and the message was simple, “if you want to learn you will pay attention to what is going on around you”. I turned into a sponge and tried to soak up as much as possible. The best lesson I learned was that all these high caliber resources were all still learning themselves, and better yet, willing to admit when they were wrong. Fast forward a few years and I’m fortunate enough to be working with the team at Mobile Track Solutions. This company is founded on the principal of learning, adjusting, and refining as we grow and move forward. Our staff is comprised of great people that want to win and are humble enough to know we have plenty to learn. We are fortunate to work with ownership that is still learning right along with us. I’m lucky to be able to interact with leadership from the top dealers in the world and my goal is to learn something new in every interaction. My belief is the day I stop learning is the day I have given up, and I never want that day to come. In the technology age we are in, it is easy to plug in earbuds and live in your phone. I challenge you to ditch the earbuds, set technology aside for a while and see what the world is offering to teach you today!

  • Never Forget Where You Came From

If you’ve read through our blog posts or followed along with our journey at MTS, you know that we have seen substantial growth and change over the last 3-4 years. I’ve had the opportunity of experiencing firsthand the development of each area of the business and the evolution that has taken place. The expansion of our brand awareness and business comes with a wide array of new daily tasks, discussions, processes, events, collaboration, and much more. It is extremely exciting and rewarding to be able to work with our MTS family and team of dealers to continue to bring our customers the best possible experience. While all of the great things going on within our company and industry are exhilarating, it is also extremely important to stop and reflect on the people and experiences that got us to where we are today. Not too long ago, MTS was a company of less than 50 employees and basically starting from scratch - beginning research and development, designing equipment, fabricating and assembly components, testing the product, and doing it all over again until they got it right. The dedication of those very first employees was what set the foundation of the MTS that everyone knows today. (Luckily, many of the original members of #TeamMTS are still working at 203 Johnson Street every day!) Honestly, it is inspiring to look back and see how the company has evolved over the last 10+ years. It also offers a sense of reality when it feels like we are wrapped up in the hustle and bustle, allowing us to refocus on what the overall mission is. With the knowledge and experience of our entire team at MTS, I have no doubt that we will continue to make history in the industry for years to come.
